August in Banner Elk and Little Bear Farm

Things to do in August in Banner Elk

Banner Elk is a special place any time of the year.  August is especially nice.  At the height of summer, the temps are mild and provide a welcome escape from the heat all around.  As a tiny town, (we have one stop light) Banner Elk has a small town feel but offers an unusual variety of events and activities not usually found in a small town.  For August here is a small sample of the events in addition to all the local businesses and activities.

  • August3,10,17,24:  Free Concerts-Tate Evans Park, Banner Elk.  If you haven't visited this park you are in for a treat.  This park offers a paved walking trail that runs along a beautiful creek.  There are a variety of seating, picnicking, and play areas.  These concerts are offered in an outdoor concert seating area that seats individuals and families.  Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and enjoy.
  • August 4, 11, 18:  Family Fun Night Series at Brick Oven-Beech Mountain-  We don't have personal experience with this series but have heard good things.
  • August 4,11,18:  Grandfather by Night-Grandfather Mountain-  Night or day, Grandfather Mountain is worth the time to visit.  By night, its even more special
  • August 5,6:  Art on the Green-  Down Town Banner Elk-  This art/Craft show is right in the center of town.  It offers a variety of artists and craftsmen from all around.  Enjoy the atmosphere and shop for beautiful  and unique gifts and treasures.
  • August 11,13:  Avery County Art and Master Crafts Festival-Sugar Mtn Resort-  We don't have personal experience with this festival but we have heard good things.

At Little Bear Farm, it's all good. Whether you decide to drive the 3 miles up NC scenic Byway 194 to Banner Elk, or the 3 miles down 194 to Valle Crucis, or 11 miles into Boone, there's plenty to do in the cool summer air.  Or you could just stay at the farm and enjoy the quiet mountain atmosphere from the porch.  Wether its deer, turkeys or some other wildlife passing through, a visit to our little pond, or checking out our mown walking trail along the edge of the field and woods, Little Bear Farm offers a cool quiet escape from the heat and bustle of summer in August.

So come on in, sit a spell, take your shoes off... Little Bear Farm is the place to stay in Banner Elk.

Banner Elk Weather

What is the deal with the weather?  Mid April we were looking forward to an early summer with temps in the upper 70's.  This week is blustery, cold, and there is a forecast for snow.  Blame it on what you wish. Global warming, the 50 year cycle, or just plain old mountain weather.    Truth is Banner Elk experiences some of the biggest and fastest shifts in weather around.  If you are planning a trip you might want to bring your flip flops and ear muffs.  You just never know.

Seriously, our climate is one of our charms.  It allows a variety of seasons (even if they are all in one day) which allows a rich variety of flora and fauna to flourish.    We have a huge variety of wild plants and animals native to the area.  When you visit, be sure to check out the many local parks, such as Valle Crucis Park, Banner Elk Park, Daniel Boone Park, and Moses Cone Park;  and features such as Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, Linville Caverns.

So, we are Dog Friendly?

What does that mean?

All of our listings at Little Bear Farm are dog friendly!  And........ We Do Not Charge a Dog Fee!!  You can bring up to 3 house trained and well behaved dogs at no cost.  We ask that you add them to your reservation so we know that dogs are staying in the listing, but Yes!!! Bring your dogs.

What does dog friendly mean besides that?  Our business is set up to accommodate your pet or for those that travel without pets.  We offer a high level of clean, meaning that all linens and towels are washed between each guest.  We offer crates so you don't have to pack your own.

Best of all.......We offer a huge private mown field where you can take your dog for a romp.  Our property is mostly surrounded by forest owned by the Episcopal Mission allowing our property a nice private feel.  We also have a pond.  Your dogs are welcome if you want to supervise but you are going to have to clean the mess up if they go swimming.  :)

Our property is home to other dogs or dog guests, so be on the lookout for visitors from the neighborhood.  We are also home to a wide range of wildlife including small animals such as rabbits, chipmunks, frogs, o'possums, raccoons, turkeys, song birds and large animals such as deer, bear, coyotes, and we suspect the occasional mountain lion (that is not confirmed).

For all of that,  the next question is;  What do we expect in return?

  • We ask that you treat our listing as you would your own and leave it in the condition you found it.
  • Poop Happens!  Sometimes the neighborhood dogs leave gifts but we try to stay on it.  We encourage you to make poop walks into the field.  If your dog poops near the listing, we provide a scoop.  Just scoop it up and flip it into the field.  We are in the process of installing Poop Stations but they are not in place.  We prefer that you not use poop bags and leave them in the trash as we have to haul the trash to the container site in our car.
  • When you leave your dog unsupervised in the listing, we encourage you to utilize a crate as that tends to support dogs in a strange place and helps to keep them from destroying blinds and damaging walls, doors, and furniture.  We are sorry to say that we will ask for reimbursement in the event that your pet causes damage.
  • When you gotta go...  urine stains are a subject of contention with the cleaning crew.  Unfortunately they happen more than you think, even with careful conscientious owners.   We ask that you check closely behind your pup during your stay and when you check out for puddles.  We leave an assortment of cleaning materials and if you need more don't hesitate to ask for more.  However, if you leave excessive urine stains or puddles that require extensive cleaning or the crew has to move furniture or appliances to clean puddles...... please know that we will assess a hefty cleanup fee to reimburse for the cost of the labor and damage.
  • When your dog is outside, be aware of the presence of neighboring dogs, and wildlife.  While deer are beautiful and cute, a doe with a fawn is nothing to play with.  Coyotes can also be unpleasant face to face.

We are excited to meet you a
